Seth Sykora-Bodie, a NOAA marine scientist and a National Geographic Explorer, told National Geographic, “Anyone who has been there will struggle to explain what’s so mesmerizing about it, but they’ll all agree that the glaciers are bluer, the air colder, the mountains more intimidating, and the landscapes more captivating than anywhere else you can go. Our experienced team supply marine services and turnkey vessels of all kinds, to users in the Commercial Shipping, Aquaculture and Recreational boating. With official recognition by National Geographic, Tait said that more people and children will be able to learn about this unique ocean and its wonder.
#Southern ocean driver
These characteristics make the ACC a powerful driver of global water and heat circulation. 'Many of the animals in the Southern Ocean either eat krill, or eat the animals that eat krill,' says Scales.

These tiny, shrimp-like crustaceans may be small fry at the bottom of the food chain, but they are one of the most important animals in the Southern Ocean. The ACC is a 34 million year old stream that is colder and less salty than the water just north of it. The ocean's ecosystem thrives on huge numbers of Antarctic krill. But the water of the Southern Ocean is not just an extension of those oceans. Most oceans are bounded by continents-this one, rather, encircles Antarctica and is bordered by three other oceans. The Southern Ocean is unbroken or uninterrupted by any landmass, with its northern limit extending into the other three larger oceans. A warming of 2C in the Southern Ocean is predicted to reduce winter sea ice coverage by 10-15 and up to 30 in some key areas. Sea temperatures vary from about 10C to -2C. It is located on the lower end of the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Ocean, and includes the tributary seas around the Antarctic region. The ocean has typical depths of between 4,000 and 5,000 metres the lowest point is -7,235m at the southern end of the South Sandwich Trench. What makes the Southern Ocean so distinct is in large part due to the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). The Southern Ocean is the southernmost portion of the World Ocean.
